Cosmetic products contamination may occur by microorganisms at various stages of their life cycle, from production and storage to daily consumer use. Once opened, repeated skin contacts and environmental exposure, combined with poor hygiene, product sharing, improper storage and the use of expired products, can significantly increase the risk of microbial proliferation. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the main sources of microbial contamination in cosmetic products, the most frequently detected microorganisms, the current microbial contamination limits regulations, and the preservation and quality control strategies adopted by the cosmetic industry to ensure product safety.
