SKIN Microbiota

SKIN Microbiota

A healthy balanced skin microbiota is a microbial shield against the pathogenic microorganisms colonization, prevents the dry skin condition, improves the skin health and modulates host immunity. To  maintain a robust cutaneous homeostasis, it is fundamental to limit the skin carriage and invasion of the dermato-pathogen S. aureus, preserving the resident microbial population. If S. aureus colonization increases, S. epidermidis and others coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS) colonization decreases, there is a dysbiosis with unbalanced skin microbiota and tissues damage. New eco-friendly strategies have been proposed to balance the skin microbiota suppressing the pathogens colonization without interfering the commensal microbial growth. Our researches focus on the effect of new emerging prebiotics combinations and natural extract with a species-specific action in line with the “OneHealth” approach and he National Recovery and Resilience Plan with the green economy that is one of the key objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This is the project of the PON phd (LINK).

Wounds that do not respond normally to treatments after four weeks or that do not heal completely within two months are defined as chronic, constituting a silent epidemic problem affecting billions of people worldwide.
A research topic characterizing our lab is focused on the study of Helicobacter pylori, a fickle gastroduodenal pathogen, included by the WHO in the list of bacteria for which new antibiotics are urgently needed.
