The protein aggregation increases in the bacteria under stressful conditions helping them to cope with proteotoxic stresses and improving the survival during antibiotic treatments. It has been demonstrated that in dormancy state there is an increase of protein aggregation inducing different types of dormancy stages. The first aggregation may produce sensitive cells to switch to the shallowly dormant persister state. Subsequently, the development of aggregates leads these persister cells into a deeper dormant VBNC state. Hence, the protein aggregation in bacteria is related to the dormancy process.
