Klebsiella pneumoniae “permeability” to mobile genetic elements is a key factor both for its multidrug resistance and virulence. The authors, through a sequence analysis of 50 carbapenem susceptible or resistant K. pneumoniae strains isolated in the Palermo area (Sicily, Italy), find a shifting epidemiological frame with new emerging MDR clones. In addition, the identified worrying co-existence of antibiotic resistance and virulence factors represents an important issue to take into consideration to develop epidemiological surveillance programs and avoid outbreaks difficult to treat.
