Mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance in biofilms
This review outlines the biofilm life cycle, phenotypic traits of biofilms, and the role of the matrix and persister cells in biofilm’s inherent resistance to antimicrobial agents. It was also examined how biofilms can develop antibiotic resistance and transfer resistance genes within the biofilm structure. Additionally, multispecies biofilms and the effects of various interactions, including collaboration and competition, among species on antimicrobial tolerance in polymicrobial biofilm communities are addressed.
