An unbalanced skin microbiota due to an increase in pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus strains vs commensal S. epidermidis strains can be efficiently tackle by using prebiotics such as Xylitol-XYL and Galacto-OligoSaccharides-GOS, Fructo-OligoSaccharides-FOS, IsoMalto-Oligosaccharides-IMO, ArabinoGaLactan-LAG, inulin, dextran. The combinations of XYL plus GOS or FOS or IMO or LAG may help to control the balance of skin microbiota acting with a species-specific action against S. aureus in planktonic and sessile phase without interfering with S. epidermidis growth. These innovative eco-friendly prebiotics combinations represent valid strategies for the skin care in topic formulations.
