Chronic wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers, are difficult to treat due to the presence of microbial biofilm, high level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that delay the wound healing process affecting the patient’s lifestyle. Nowadays, the search of new non-antibiotic solutions to counteract the chronic wound lesions is a new challenge and the enzyme-based biomaterials represent suitable strategies. Enzyme-based biomaterials combine the antimicrobial/anti-oxidant/anti-inflammatory therapy of catalytic enzymes with biomaterials providing a suitable microenvironment for treating wounds and endow enzymes with better biocompatibility and physiological stability. Multiple forms of enzyme-based biomaterials have been developed, including hydrogels, MOFs, and nanomaterials. Enzyme-based biomaterials are innovative solutions for diabetic wound healing applications and for regenerative biomedicines.
