The use of molecular-based techniques, such as NGS, allows the identification of a variety of commensal microbiota that colonizes the human cornea and conjunctiva. The study of this microbiota population is important to improve the knowledge of the role of homeostatic microorganisms in the prevention of several ophthalmic diseases and to develop new therapeutic strategies, including probiotics.
